System memory market has become as big as other component the main reason is due to memory hunger programs and games which brings even the 4gb+ 800mhz latest RAM to its knees and we in common are willing to suck the juice out of our program and games with all options turned on. Of course an typical office system will never need more than 2gb of ram as of now to overcome basic office job like word processing and internet usage. So today there is a huge hype over the DDR 3 ram lets see what it has in paper and in reality.
Tech Spec:Appearance in common :-*DDR II 2002 *DDR III Not Yet early 2009.
Data Transfer Rate :-*DDR II 400-800 Mbit/s *DDR III 800-1600 Mbit/s.
Voltage :-*DDRII 1.8 V ± 0.1V *DDR III 1.5 V ± 0.075 V.
Banks: :-*DDR II 4/8 *DDR III 8.
Prefetch :-*DDR II 4 bits *DDR III 8 bits.
Burst Length :-*DDR II BL=4,8 *DDR III BL=4,8.
Topology :-*DDR II Conventional T *DDR III Fly-by.
CAS Latency :-*DDR II 3-5 *DDR III 6-10.
Chip Packaging :-*DDR II 60 BGA for x4/x8 and 84 BGA for x16 *DDR III 78 BGA for x4/x8 and 96 BGA for x16.
Chip Capacity :-*DDR II 256 Mbit-4GB *DDR III 512 Mbit-8GB.
The above sheet is a technical view, but piratically if you have planned to adopt or migrate to DDR3 it may have a big bite in your pocket since now DDR3 are priced extremely high and even though there are motherboards available which support DDR3(only from intel backing AMD fan boys have to wait a while since DDR3 has not yet attracted AMD guys.)memory like GIGABYTE X48T-DQ6 and Asus Striker II Extreme even Biostar offers P35 with DDR3 they also are targeted at enthusiasts. Also don't forget to note that latency which plays a equal role in performance are as DDR2*1066 are out with 5-5-5-15 and even can expect DDR2 -1111 later as they are now crawling in drawing board, Where as in other hand we can see only DDR3-1066 at *9-9-9-24 or minmum of 7-8-7-14 not more than that at least for now. So its clear that at least for couple of years DDR2 will dominate the market.
